Sports Turin: From soccer games to outdoor activities

Sports Turin: From soccer games to outdoor activities

Sporty Torino: From soccer matches to outdoor activities.

In collaboration with Università degli Studi di Torino, Campus EDISU Piemonte, Fondazione Collegio Einaudi, and with the sponsorship of the City of Turin, the Torino OnMove project was born. This initiative was selected as part of the Compagnia di Sanpaolo Foundation's Muoviamoci call for proposals. The project aims to promote outdoor physical activity and offer people new opportunities to engage in regular physical activity.

The Coronavirus pandemic has led to increased awareness of the importance of public green space and outdoor activities. Although the world has come to a standstill, the desire to move and engage in physical activity has exploded, both inside and outside cities. This trend had already been evident for several years, but the health emergency has further accelerated this trend.

According to a study conducted by the National Tourist Research Institute together with Legambiente, in 2020, 30 percent of vacationers indicated sports as their main reason for vacationing. Trekking was the most popular activity, followed by bicycle touring. In addition, 49.2% of people did tourism in natural places.

All this love for nature and the desire to offer people new opportunities to practice physical activity led to the birth of Torino OnMove. This project, promoted by the Turin University Sports Center in collaboration with the University of Turin, EDISU Piemonte Campus, and Einaudi College Foundation, offers numerous sports activities that will take place in 10 parks in the Piedmontese capital.

Sports activities offered include running, walking, free body workouts, stretching, breathing control and more. Those enrolled will be able to participate in these activities on a bi/weekly basis. The University of Turin will participate in the project by providing a quantitative measure of the effect these physical activities will have on participants' physical abilities.

Registration is open and the subscription to Torino OnMove will cost 10 euros per month per park. The subscription will include CUS membership with insurance included, participation in all park activities, and a welcome kit consisting of a fanny pack, cell phone holder, bag, and microfiber towel.

This project is an opportunity to bring the citizenry closer to sports and outdoor activities. Measuring the effect of these physical activities on participants' physical abilities will help to change lifestyles and guide future choices. In addition, this initiative promotes physical activity as a tool for prevention, awareness of environmental issues, and sociability.

Historical context and evolution

The love of outdoor physical activity has grown steadily in recent years. However, the Coronavirus health emergency has further accelerated this trend. The prevention and containment measures put in place to counter the spread of the virus have led people to rediscover outdoor activities as a form of recreation and wellness.

The study conducted by the National Institute for Tourism Research together with Legambiente showed that in 2020, 30 percent of vacationers chose to practice sports while on vacation. Trekking was the most popular activity, followed by bicycle touring. In addition, almost half of the people did tourism in natural places.

All this interest in outdoor physical activity led to the birth of Torino OnMove. This project, promoted by the Torino University Sports Center in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Torino, Campus EDISU Piemonte, and Fondazione Collegio Einaudi, offers people the opportunity to practice physical activity in 10 parks in Torino.

Future Perspectives

The promotion of outdoor physical and sporting activity, combined with the conscious enjoyment of natural heritage, is a goal that is also supported by the Compagnia di Sanpaolo Foundation's new call Sportivi per natura. This call aims to accompany the recovery path of sports associations, which have been severely penalized by the last two years of restrictions.

Initiatives such as Torino OnMove demonstrate the Foundation's commitment to promoting physical activity as a tool for prevention, environmental awareness and sociability. These projects offer new opportunities to improve people's health and well-being, as well as foster awareness of the benefits of outdoor physical activity.
